The History

Staying in Antica Corte San Pietro means sleeping in a place full of history. In the 13th century, the religious Order of the Humiliati settled here, establishing an oratory that later became the historic Church of San Pietro.
The original monastery’s facade — made of brick and river stones — still stands, with a portico of four Gothic arches on pillars.
The Church of San Pietro, also known as the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Help, is the oldest religious building in Gorgonzola, probably built in the 1200s as the chapel of the Humiliati convent. The order was dissolved in 1568 by Pope Pius V, and the complex has since undergone several transformations while maintaining its historical charm.

Gorgonzola: Heritage and Tradition

Gorgonzola is not only famous for its charming historic center but is also world-renowned as the birthplace of the celebrated Gorgonzola DOP cheese, one of Italy’s most beloved dairy products.

Fun facts about Gorgonzola cheese:

A romantic mistake: legend says a cheesemaker, distracted by love, mixed curds from different days, accidentally creating this unique blue-veined cheese.

A thousand-year history: its origins date back to 1007 AD, making it a product with over a millennium of tradition.

Winston Churchill: it’s said that Churchill loved Gorgonzola so much he forbade the bombing of its dairies during WWII.

On the Titanic: Gorgonzola was served in the first-class restaurant of the RMS Titanic.

Gorgonzola Festival: since 1998, every September the town celebrates its famous cheese with food markets, tastings, and live cooking shows.
